Preparing for your arrival

Getting Here:

The closest airport in Nicaragua is Augusto C. Sandino, in Managua, which is a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from San Juan del Sur.

This is the airport that we are offering the free shuttle from

Alternatively, there are two options in Costa Rica: flying into Liberia (~2 hour drive) or San Jose (~5 hour drive).

Arrival Process

Shuttles will be organized to get from the International Airport of Managua. If you opted for this option, a driver will be waiting for you with a NOMA COLLECTIVE sign.

If by any reason you cannot make the shuttle, no worries, it is super easy to arrange a taxi, they’re available 24 hours. (more or less USD $2-5)

If you opted to make your own way, please head to the hotel reception area and check in as you would a normal hotel visit.

Orientation

Once you are all settled in your room, we’ll have a Welcome ceremony, where we will give you an orientation whereby we will run through the program and show you around the hotel. This is also a great opportunity to meet other Noma community members.

Things you should know before you pack: 

Weather:

The average temperature in San Juan del Sur in August for a typical day ranges from a high of 85°F (30°C) to a low of 79°F (26°C). Some would describe it as very warm with a gentle breeze.

Be prepared that there might be light showers occasionally mainly through the night. Don't worry, you'll still have beautiful sunny days.

Packing list Noma recommends:

Cash - The currency is codobas (there are ATMS in town, most places do not accept card)

Swim wear

Light clothing, it is likely to be warm throughout your stay

Comfortable Walking shoes/ open toes slippers/ sandals

Sunscreen

Bug spray

Clothing and shoes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty on excursion

Day backpack

Bottle for water

Dry bag - useful but not necessary

Ethernet adaptor if you require an ethernet cable

Location

The Neighborhood - San Juan Del Sur

Overview

This coastal town on the Pacific Ocean plays host to a beautiful bay, a great gastronomic scene, and hospitable, cheerful people. While the local economy was, for many years, based on fishing and shipping, it has shifted towards tourism in the last 20 years. It is now a popular destinations for surfers, Nicaraguan families, and foreign tourists.

Food

The typical food of San Juan del Sur is simple and comforting: rice, beans, plantain, fish. Over the past years, many new restaurants with international cuisine offerings have opened.

Surf

San Juan del Sur is considered the “Mecca of Surfing” in Nicaragua. Swell chasers will find many spots pumping both north and south of the Bay. Maderas is a must.

Nature

Located 20 km south of the city, you’ll find “Wildlife Refuge La Flor.” It protects unique and very important resources, including 5 species of sea turtles that nest on Nicaragua’s Pacific beaches. Playa La Flor is one of the few in the world that annually receives the arrival of Paslama turtles between July-January. It is possible to camp on the beach to observe the spawning of these turtles.

There are plenty of beautiful beaches, surfing, snorkelling/diving and jungle treks waiting to be explored.

 Transportation 

Walking and Biking

San Juan del Sur is a walkable and bike-friendly town, making it easy to explore the different cafes and shops, and get to the beach. 07 minutes walking from Outsite to town.

Public Transport

To explore beaches beyond the Bay, taxis and shuttles are available. These typically cost around $10 one-way.

Scooters and ATVs

Scooters and ATVs make it easier to visit the surrounding area. They cost $60-120 per day. Contact the Community Manager to arrange a vehicle.

Car Rentals

If you're planning to surf, we highly recommend renting a car to reach Popoyo and Maderas.

Events Schedule

We announce the weekly events Schedule on slack every Sunday Afternoon, which includes, depending on the day, 2 or 3 events.

Wellbeing: Yoga, meditation, running/walks around the town.

Adventure: Weekly adventures exploring the town secrets.

Community: We host various events to bring everyone together like our family dinner or potlucks.

Professional Growth: Noma community members have the chance to host workshops that are either their professional background or something they find interesting or useful for other guests. We usually have one a week. If this is something you're interested in - please reach out to the Community Manager to plan this into our schedule.

Code of Conduct 

We are a community, please be supportive in people’s efforts to organise things and ask questions. There are no such things as stupid questions or boring events.

We have a lot of solo travellers and people’s arrival times are staggered, so please make sure that you’re friendly and welcoming to new arrivals as it can be a pretty daunting process at the start.

We attract people from all backgrounds, creeds and ideologies. Please be conscious when making comments about religions, divisive political figures or national stereotypes. Be considerate. Social etiquette applies here as it does elsewhere:

• Don't touch people without their consent
• Respect people’s privacy, including their right to personal space (they might not want to be disturbed)
• Report any unsavory, criminal or unwelcome behaviour to a member of the resort staff
